What is AI Mode and why should businesses care?

If you’re running a small business, chances are you don’t spend your afternoons buried in Google updates. But every so often, one rolls out that’s actually worth a closer look. This is one of them.

So let’s break it down—no jargon, no panic, just straight-up answers.

Google’s rolling out something called AI Mode—and it’s basically like having a super-smart assistant answer your customers’ questions directly in search, before they even click on a website.

Now here’s the twist: if your website content is used in that answer, it counts as a win for you. If it’s not? That potential customer might never reach your site at all.

Why is Google talking about it so much?

How do you know if your site shows up?

Google tracks this through a tool called Search Console—basically a dashboard that shows how often your site pops up in search, how many people click it, and what they searched for. Similar like your Social Media insights where you measure how many people watched your post, how many clicked etc... You get the point.

Now, with AI Mode traffic showing up in your stats, it’s more important than ever to know:

  • Are you getting clicks from these AI answers?

  • Is your site actually being seen?

  • Are follow-up questions sending people back to your content?

Wait... follow-up questions?

Yep. In AI Mode, when someone asks a follow-up (and let’s be real—we all do), Google treats it like a fresh new search. So if your site appears again in that answer? It’s another opportunity. And another set of clicks and stats in your report. That’s why it’s important your site is clear, helpful, and easy for Google’s AI to understand—not just for that first question, but all the ones after it too.

BUT! There’s a little "problem" for data nerds like me: Google won’t let you filter AI Mode separately - yet. That means all the data is mixed in with traditional search results. So no—you can’t isolate how many impressions came from AI Mode or whether those clicks were on your actual website.

Now, you might be thinking:
"But Elena, isn’t that exactly why you’re here? To read the data, predict customer behavior, and optimize my website for this whole AI thing? Isn’t that what your AI Marketer and AI Specialist certifications are for?"

I am so glad you asked! And YES! That is exactly what I do. I help businesses tweak their content's SEO by rewriting it and becoming a GEO - Generative Engine Optimization.

Here is the article that Forbes published about this service.

So, what should you actually do?

Here’s the action plan, plain and simple:

  1. Make your content helpful, not fluffy. Think about the questions your customers ask and answer them directly.

  2. Keep things structured. Use headers, lists, and short paragraphs so it’s easy to scan—for people and Google. Just like this blog. Wink.

  3. Be mobile-friendly. More than half of searches happen on phones—your site needs to look good and load fast.

  4. Update regularly. Fresh content tells Google you’re still active and trustworthy.
